Association of Hypothyroidism With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Hospital Based Experience in a Tertiary Care Centre

Background:Thyroid diseases and diabetes mellitus are the two most common endocrine disorders encountered in clinical practice. Type 2 (T2DM) has an intersecting underlying pathology with thyroid dysfunction. Insulin hormones intimately involved cellular metabolism thus excess or deficit of either these result functional derangement other.Despite absence definite guidelines regarding screening for dysfunction diabetic patients, view this incidence together mutual effect endocrinopathies on each other increased risk complications patients setting abnormal dysfunction, a systematic approach to testing is favorable. Methods:A Cross sectional descriptive observational study was performed at tertiary care centre.Patients 30 years older known type DM without between March 2018 September were included by purposive sampling technique.A total 100 study. Results:Among 13(26%) had abnormalities, 8 cases male 5 female. Thyroid abnormality associated duration DM. The mean disease 6.28±2.57 normal profile group 10.92±8.13 (hypothyroidism hyperthyroidism) group. Patients poor glycemic control prone develop like abnormality. HbA1c also shows positive correlation patients. Regarding definition abnormality, 7% Primary hypothyroidism, 2% Subclinical hypothyroidism 3% primary hyperthyroidism single case subclinical hyperthyroidism. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that disorder patient. It seems unidentified could positively impact its complications. ability diagnose treat unsuspected may greatly enhance quality life.
